Announcement – Passing of Dr Andre Marais

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Dr Andre Marais, Senior Lecturer at the Department of Pharmacology, University of Pretoria.

Dr Andre Marais joined the University of Pretoria 1 September 2013 as a Lecturer at the Department of Pharmacology. He held a BPharm, MBChB, MSc (Pharmacology) and was registered as one of few specialist Clinical Pharmacologists in the country.

Dr Marais was dedicated to academia and was an active healthcare practitioner. He served as Vice-President of the South African Society for Basic and Clinical Pharmacology, he was the Deputy-Chair of the South African Medical Association’s Social and Ethics Committee and a Council Member of the South African Academy of Family Physicians and National Councillor of the College of Clinical Pharmacologists (Colleges of Medicine South Africa).

As a Medical Doctor, Pharmacist, and Clinical Pharmacologist, Dr Marais possessed a skillset that made him an asset in his role as a Lecturer and Supervisor. He developed and coordinated the Regulatory Affairs track in the BSc Honours Pharmacology programme which was a first and only of its kind in the country.

Dr Marais was passionate about his career and he will be remembered for his kindness and generosity. We have lost a good friend, a dedicated colleague and a great physician. Our sincere condolences to colleagues, the family and friends.
