SAAFP’s George Group
The George Complex Family Medicine Department is situated in the George Geographic Surface Area (GSA), encompassing the Eden and Central Karoo districts in the Western Cape of South Africa. The department offers services to the George community (10 PHC clinics, Bethesda Care Centre (AIDS, Cancer, Step-down), Harry Comay TB hospital, private sector), George regional hospital, and the 10 outlying district hospitals. The clinical areas covered include Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine, ENT, Urology, Dermatology, Maxillo-Facial surgery, Oncology, Forensic Medicine, Infectious diseases (HIV/TB), Psychiatry, and Haemophylia.
Teaching and training are big components, with a strong link to the Division of Family Medicine at Stellenbosch University Faculty of Health Sciences. The MMed (Fam Med) is offered locally, with 7 registrars undergoing training at any one time in the complex. A number of research projects are active, with some publications.
An active CPD program runs at George Hospital and the surrounding facilities in the GSA, under the auspices of the South African Academy of Family Physicians. A combination of Friday morning CPD discussions, Ethics meetings, academic ward rounds, theatre discussions, specialist clinic meetings, and other educational meetings take place.
All doctors, allied health professionals, and nurses from public or private practice are always welcome.
