LECTURER/MEDICAL OFFICER (Permanent full-time appointment)
UCT Division of Family Medicine seeks to appoint a lecturer in family medicine to assist with convening the 2nd and 3rd year Family Medicine strand within the Becoming a Doctor (BaDr) course, as Deputy Strand Convener. This is a permanent full- time academic position and is available from 1 January 2022.
The BaDr course comprises of three strands – Family Medicine, Clinical Skills and Languages This course integrates three strands, namely family medicine, clinical skills, and language and communication (isiXhosa & Afrikaans). Students learn and practice interviewing skills, history-taking and physical examination skills and learn concepts of professionalism and human rights. The family medicine strand aims to develop an understanding of the delivery of healthcare, its management and organization as well as introducing students to aspects of health promotion and disease prevention. Students gain practical experience of the doctor-patient relationship, the bio-psycho-social approach to patientcare and the consultation process and, develop skills in the basic clinical examination of patients within a community setting. Tutorials integrate the learning of clinical skills with language acquisition and understanding of cultural aspects ofpatient interaction. Later, learning takes place in community practices, clinics and other centres, where students interact with patients.
Requirements for the job:
- Registration and in good standing with the HPCSA as a Medical
- Clinical experience includes 2-years post-community service of diagnostic clinical practice (at primary care level) in public or private
- Demonstrable clinical teaching experience with undergraduate and/or postgraduate medical students which indicates a commitment to develop as a health sciences
- Familiarity with the South African healthcare
- The ability to interact effectively with a wide range of professionals at designated teaching

- Proven track record of formal teaching experience with undergraduate and/or postgraduate medical students in the higher education environment, with exposure to blended/online learning and small group-based
- A postgraduate qualification in family medicine and related disciplines (such as public health and primary care) and/or health sciences education would be

Responsibilities:
- To assist with convening the 2nd and 3rd year Family Medicine strand within Becoming a Doctor (BaDr) course in the MBChB programme.
- To assist with the teaching and learning activities on campus and clinical teaching in district-based health services and NGOs in the Division’s MBChB Family Medicine BaDr
- To maintain and further develop the curriculum and oversee its effective
- To contribute to academic leadership and administration in the Division of Family Medicine, the School of Public Health and Family Medicine, the Faculty of Health Sciences as well as the broader UCT academic
- To conduct family medicine and primary care-related
- To contribute to the university’s social responsiveness
The appointment will be on UCT Academic Clinical conditions of service. The annual cost of employment, including benefits will be based on the University’s clinical pay line which is aligned to OSD rates.
