Obituary: Professor S.S. (Cyril) Naidoo

1952 – 2021

It is with great sadness and with a heavy heart that I write this Obituary on Prof Cyril Naidoo- 1952-2021.

As Principal Specialist-Family Medicine, I have interacted with Prof Naidoo on a professional and academic basis as my HOD since January 2008 to date.

Prof Naidoo led by exemplary standards of professionalism, knowledge and patient-centred teaching.

He was an enabling HOD who had facilitated the progress of all members of the Dept. towards ongoing academic development with regards to their PhD programmes and the opportunity to be external examiners at sister departments at other universities.

Obituary: Professor Mohammed Hoosen Cassimjee

17th February 1942 – 4th January 2021

Professor Mohammed Hoosen (affectionately known as “Papoo”) Cassimjee was an icon in the founding and development of family medicine in South Africa. His interests lay deeply rooted in the practice of family medicine as well as the psychiatric and sexual medicine aspects of this discipline. He held the firm view that family medicine academics should continue to practice in their communities to enable them to develop better models of practice and to focus their research on matters which were important for these communities. This was perhaps partly because he had worked in a private practice partnership in Pietermaritzburg for around 18-years prior to entering academic practice. He was a valued colleague and friend over many years.

Invitation to attend the NHI webinars

Dr Nicholas Crisp, Public Health Specialist

Dr Crisp is a medical doctor and public health specialist who has for many years focused on health management consulting across the African continent. He was Superintendent General (HOD) of the Department of Health and Welfare, Northern Province (Limpopo) where he served from 1994 to 1999.

Dr Crisp was then a self-employed consultant and has worked on projects in several African countries including South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, Lesotho, Botswana, Namibia and Tanzania. In 2009 he served as Special Adviser to Minister Barbara Hogan. He was intimately involved in the establishment of the National Health Laboratory Service (NHLS), the transfer of the medicolegal mortuaries from police to health and the creation of the Forensic Pathology Services, and in the establishment of the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA).

He is now working with the Minister of Health on implementation of the National Health Insurance Fund, and like everyone else was diverted to support the Covid19 response for a while.

The webinar is based on the series of articles published in the South African Family Practice and it is the ideal time to ask Dr Crisp your questions.

Webinar 1:
The Big picture
Registration of patients

Webinar 2:
Accreditation of practices/providers
Remuneration of practices/providers

A link to the webinar will be sent to all registrants closer to the time.

The role of family physicians in emergency and essential surgical care in the district health system in South Africa

To read the original article go to the South African Family Practice website.

Introduction

Five Billion people lack access to safe surgical care worldwide and the greatest burden of unmet surgical need lies in low- and middle-income countries. Improved access to timely, safe and affordable surgical care for all is a global health priority. National surgical planning has been declared an imperative in South Africa, although little priority has been given to this by government policymakers.

From the President’s Desk

Dear Colleagues,

In May the theme of World Family Doctor’s Day was “family doctors on the frontline”. As family doctors we remain on the frontline of the COVID-19 epidemic and I hope that all our members are managing to stay safe while continuing to offer services to our patients.
