Background

Work-integrated Learning (WIL) is a key part of training health care professionals, and yet opportunities to build capacity in clinical supervision have been limited.  The CMSA/SACOMD is in the process of incorporating workplace-based assessment (WBA) into postgraduate medical education of doctors in South Africa. To ensure that WBA is conducted in a professional, effective, and standardised manner, it is recognised that training clinical supervisors who support registrars in the workplace is essential. In 2025, the SWAT training for doctors on WBA was developed to provide clinical supervisors with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to perform assessments and provide feedback in the workplace. Over 300 consultants across ten universities in South Africa were trained in 2025.

The SWAT training for doctors has been adapted into a 6-hour interprofessional workshop, with its first offering at the SAAHE conference. It will cover essential concepts for work-integrated learning, an opportunity for personal reflection on becoming an exceptional clinical supervisor, and capacity-building in giving effective feedback.

Who Should Participate

The SWAT training for doctors has been adapted into a 6-hour interprofessional workshop targeting health care professionals who provide training, supervision and support to undergraduate and postgraduate trainees in clinical learning environments. This includes doctors, nurses, rehabilitation professionals, pharmacists, counsellors and psychologists, social workers, etc.
