2nd Wonca Africa Regional Conference: 25 - 28 October 2009

Rustenburg Civic Centre

October 25, 2009 – October 28, 2009

The overall aim of the conference is to build consensus regarding the meaning and the practice of Family Medicine in the African context.

The Main themes are:
● The African community and context
● Family Medicine, PHC and health systems
● Training in Family Medicine
● Quality of Care
● Equity and Family Medicine
● Role of the Family Practitioner
● Private Practice
● African family values and Women in Family Medicine

The conference will be a landmark for Family Medicine on this
continent. We aim to build consensus around the interpretation of Family Medicine in our context, without assuming that the models developed elsewhere in the world are necessarily the best ones for our situation. To this end, a number of academics have prepared discussion papers which are accessible under Presentations (to the right of this text), that highlight the key issues for debate and dialogue. We hope that you will take the opportunity to read some of these prior to the conference, and arrive prepared to engage with colleagues around these crucial issues. Facilitated small group discussions focused on these themes will generate written submissions, which will be incorporated into a conference declaration on the final day, setting out our consensus position on Family Medicine in the African Context.
